First Impressions of the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale

March 14,2024

Alfa Romeo is pushing the boundaries with their latest offering, the Tonale. Under its hood, the Tonale houses a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor perched on the rear axle. Together, they pack a punch, delivering a combined output of 285 horses.

All-wheel drive comes standard, guaranteeing that power is judiciously distributed for optimal traction. A six-speed automatic transmission manages this power, while a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack promises over 30 miles of electric-only driving, granting a nod to efficiency and environmental consciousness.

The fully independent suspension system provides a solid foundation for the ride quality, and for those seeking an extra sprinkle of customization, adaptive dampers are available as an optional extra. However, during an inaugural test drive, the Tonale left us longing for more. While Alfa Romeo is known for crafting vehicular poetry through models like Giulia and Stelvio, the Tonale falls short, missing the mark on that illustrious driving engagement synonymous with the brand.

Despite the initial feeling that the Tonale isn’t quite living up to its Alfa lineage, we remain hopeful that further refinements might bridge the gap with its celebrated siblings.
